Canadian Folk Song - for concert band

Program Notes:

In October of 2019, I was introduced to a number of folk songs through my sophomore year studies. I took note of a few of my favorites, but I never really thought of those folk songs again. However, one particular piece became stuck in my head and would not leave me alone. It continued to occupy my mind for several years, but I had a very difficult time finding the right way to put it to paper. By the Spring of 2022, I was reaching the conclusion of my undergraduate studies and I still had this folk song stuck in my head. When the opportunity arose to write a band piece for Dr. Nam’s ensemble, everything suddenly clicked. I grew up playing in a symphonic band and it made perfect sense to compose a piece using a folk song as well as paying homage to the band masterworks of Percy Grainger.

Canadian Folk Song is both the folk song I found in 2019 as well as my musical reaction to it. I have finally found a place for the melody that has been haunting me for years.
