In Bloom (2021)

For Oboe, Violin, & Piano

After finishing the recording aspect of the New Ballet Concert, my friend, Rameet, asked me if I wanted to collaborate again for another recording project. He wanted to record one of my pieces with the only two restrictions being that the ensemble had to be small and the piece itself had to be over ten minutes long. He also needed to record it in a week. Knowing that this was an amazing opportunity to work with such a professional like Rameet was something I was not going to pass up, regardless of the small issue of not having any piece that fit the requirements. Yes, that is correct. I wrote this entire thing in less than a week. Technically it was written in a weekend, learned in an hour, and recorded in two hours. I did not tell Rameet about the lack of music until after the recording and he just chuckled. My friends Hayden, Yoav, and Fernando came through for me again in this piece, where they learned this whole thing in only an hour and then recorded it in two hours. They are all phenomenal musicians who I can rely on completely. This was such a fun and challenging project and it definitely makes me remember why I love music. Regardless of the issues in the Spring 2021, it was certainly an excellent time to be a composer (believe it or not!) Rameet also worked tirelessly to mix and edit this huge piece, but this whole project is because of him, so thank you!

"In Bloom" is a musical representation of plant-life. The first section introduces the seedling, which then grows into a full harmonic language that then informs the rest of the music. Every harmony in the piece is harmony that was 'grown' from the opening section. The middle section depicts both a vibrant place as well as a mossy and overgrown place that are both reminiscent of Spring. Finally, the music fully blossoms and thrives, working into a groove and subsequent melody that ultimately culminates into the music from the beginning. "In Bloom" is both a study and a dedication to all of the budding flora during the Springtime.

Some days, it’s just good to be a composer. Today is one of those days

The recording session was only two hours long and was in the middle of the night. I had written the piece in only a weekend and the performers had learned the music in only a single hour-long rehearsal session.

Rameet can be seen taking pictures of his set-up in this photo while the performers make their way through the 10-minute piece.
