In Bloom (EP) is a collection of my favorite pieces that I have written from 2019 to 2021. My approach to music has changed drastically in the past years, and In Bloom shows my musical growth. Each track holds a special place in my heart as I think of all of the wonderful musicians who worked with me and performed my music. These seven pieces represent countless hours of composing, editing, performing, and recording; I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of all the encouraging people in my life.

Tracks (In Order):

Times Square (2021)

Times Square was written to create a ballet titled “Syncopated Visitors” for a New Ballet Concert in April 2021. This intricate piece reminds me of my different trips to busy cities as well as hours of rehearsing with the ensemble in my apartment due to the Pandemic. All of the performers were absolutely spectacular and really brought the music to life.

Nocturne (2019)

Nocturne was written in the Winter of 2019 as a Christmas gift for my mother and is dedicated to her. My mother had always pushed me to practice piano, even when I did not agree with her, so it was only right to compose a piece for her on that same piano. The nocturne begins in a very pensive manner until finally bursting forth with a sort of excited calmness. Every time I’m back home, I will occasionally play and my mother will sit nearby and listen as she works, often asking me about the music. I knew that she deserved her own music to hear when I come home and I hope the recorded version suffices until I return again.

Crimson Eclipse (2020)

Crimson Eclipse is written for the carillon, also known as a bell tower. This piece came about in a weird time in my life; I was doing whatever I could to still make music during the Pandemic. It occurred to me that the carillon is the perfect socially-distanced instrument and can be heard up to five miles away. Thanks to the near-infinite patience of some exceptionally talented carillon-ers, I was able to compose this piece. The music itself paints a picture of wind chimes and its audience on a distant red planet.

Canadian Folk Song (2019)

Canadian Folk Song was originally written as an exercise in overcoming writer’s block in the Fall of 2019. I had been listening to several folk songs at the time and I decided to try my hand at composing something like that. I was able to finish the piece in a single sitting and get it recorded a few months later. Canadian Folk Song sounds as if someone is calling and singing out across the ocean.

The Light of the Shore (2019)

The Light of the Shore was written due to a request from a friend at the Interlochen Summer Camp for the Arts. They wanted a woodwind quartet to play at an upcoming recital and I was tasked with writing this piece in about four days. Unfortunately, the piece was not premiered until later that year in December. The name comes from the phenomenon of the first light of springtime in Celtic regions and the piece is playful and mischievous as the Fae folk I had in mind when I wrote it.

In Bloom (2021)

In Bloom is both the name of the EP as well as this piece which both represent my growth as a musician where I feel more comfortable about my musical identity and mission. The piece was written for oboe, violin, and piano, and the whole thing had to be fully finished in a week. If I’m being perfectly honest, I procrastinated and had to write the entire thing over a weekend. In Bloom is an organic piece that grows from a single note into a living and breathing sound. This was definitely one of the hardest projects I’ve ever done, but I would not trade it in for anything.

Tubet (2019-2021)

Tubet was written for my friends Mike Anderson and Jacob Kopis, who are both remarkable tuba players. Mike originally asked me to compose him a duet in the Fall of 2019, but I was unable to begin it until the Summer due to school. The premiere was pushed around quite a bit due to the ongoing restrictions, but it finally was performed in February 2021. Mike and Jacob worked tirelessly to perfect the music and it was an absolute pleasure to compose for such a talented and unique duet.
